What Do Your Results Mean?

You’ll notice a lot of data in the results, but you only need to focus on a few things.

IPv4 Address: This is the IP address of the device from which you’ve run the command. In the picture above, the IP address is 192.168.43.68.

Default Gateway: This is the IP address of your home network, and it is usually the network’s lowest IP address. The IP address in the picture above is 192.168.43.225.

DNS Servers: When you visit the internet, your internet service provider (ISP) uses these servers to look up domain names.

How to find a free IP address for your Android

Before you can update your Android IP address, you’ll need to use a Windows PC to search for an available IP address.

1. To open the Command Prompt on a Windows computer, go to the Start menu and type cmd. Once the Command Prompt is displayed, click it.

2. Type the following command into the Command Prompt and click Enter: ipconfig/all

3. Look for “Default Gateway,” “IPv4 Address,” and “DNS Servers” information. The IPv4 Address is the IP address of the PC from which you’re entering commands, while the Default Gateway is the IP address of your network. DNS servers are two servers that are connected to your internet service provider and your internet usage.

4. To find an available IP address, type “ping” followed by the next sequential IP address after your Default Gateway. If your default gateway is 12.3.4.5, for example, the next sequential IP address is 12.3.4.6. Using this as an example, your ping command should be: ping 12.3.4.6

When you’re finished, press the Enter key.

5. If any IP address appears with the text “Destination host unreachable,” that IP address is available.

You can change your IP address on your Android device once you’ve found an available IP address.
