How to Reduce Netflix Data Usage Consumption
Consider your typical internet activities, such as document creation, online shopping, gaming, and, most likely, video streaming, when determining how much data you need. When it comes to Netflix, the quantity of data you consume is highly variable and depends on a variety of factors.
How Much Data Does Netflix Consume for Streaming?
Streaming videos on Netflix uses roughly 1 GB of bandwidth each hour, according to the company, assuming you’re streaming in standard definition. Those that watch in HD use “up to 3 GB per hour,” on the other hand.
However, because there are multiple levels of data consumption, your actual usage will be determined by how your account settings are set up.
There are three quality settings available when streaming Netflix, as well as an “Auto” feature that automatically adjusts your streaming to the highest quality possible for your internet connection:
- Low Quality: For each device, the basic definition streaming at 0.3 GB per hour.
- Medium Quality: For each device, the standard definition streaming at 0.7 GB per hour.
- High Quality: Each device can stream in high definition at up to 3 GB per hour; you can also stream in Ultra HD, a higher-quality feature designed for 4K televisions that require up to 7 GB per hour.
It’s worth noting that the default setting is “Auto,” which means your data usage might be far greater than the company’s claimed 1 GB per hour if you’re streaming with a high-speed internet connection, for example.
How to Adjust the Amount of Data You Use When Watching Netflix
You can alter the data consumption level of your Netflix account manually. Here’s how to do it.
1. Make sure you’re signed in to your Netflix account.
2. Once you’ve logged in, select the profile for which you wish to adjust the video quality settings. You’ll have to change them for each profile that you wish to save data on because they’re set per profile.

3. Click “Account” under your profile icon in the top-right corner.

4. Select “Playback settings” from the “My profile” section.

5. Click “Save” after selecting the data choice that best fits you (you can also disable auto-playback from this screen).

It’s important to remember that your modifications could take up to eight hours to take effect. In case you’re curious, downloading videos consumes roughly the same amount of data as streaming videos. So if you choose to download a show to watch when you don’t have internet access, you aren’t saving (or losing) any data.
